Principal
Bruno joined Morrows in 2014 as part of the Silverwood’s merger and is passionate about providing personalised and high quality accounting service to his clients. We spoke to Bruno of his career passions and what he does in his spare time.
What inspired you to become an accountant?
Science was never a great strength of mine at school. The natural progression was to gravitate to commerce and maths subjects which led to a business studies pathway. Having also grown up with family members in small businesses from a young age, I developed a passion for business and accounting, as I was the one entrusted with maintaining the books.
What do you think about the accounting industry and the role you have as an accountant from when you started until now?
There have been many changes in the industry since I started my career years ago. Legislation has more than quadrupled and recent changes to the financial services regime for accountants who provide superannuation services will see them having to gain an Australian Financial Services Licence from July 2016. The old days of trying to wear a variety of different hats (accountant, financial planner etc.) for clients have long gone. My role now allows me to focus on the accounting/taxation area but at the same time recognising the other services that clients may require. Being part of a multidiscipline practice that offers taxation, accounting, super, legal and wealth management services helps to facilitate this.
What would you consider to be your proudest moment in your career?
Definitely setting up and establishing an accounting practice with Bruce Silverwood (some 15 years ago) and being able to retain the quality staff that supported us in our small environment for a great length of time.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned from working in this profession?
You must be flexible, but planning your day is essential. Plans will change but regardless of whether it’s work or life in general, you should have a plan.
What do you consider to be your strengths in your role as a principal at Morrows?
Through accounting and taxation knowledge gained over the many years of experience in the profession, my strengths involve good communication and planning skills. I am committed to developing strong relationships with clients as their trusted advisor and looking forward to a long and prosperous career at Morrows making that a great home for my clients.
What advice do you have for young professionals?
Continue to learn and keep abreast of developments in the accounting and taxation profession. If that means joining professional organisations and discussion groups then do it.
What is your favourite travel destination?
My wife and I travelled to the USA for my 50th birthday in 2011 and we particularly enjoyed the east coast (New York and Washington). However, having travelled to Italy last year for my wife’s 50th birthday and given our family heritage, I must say the south of Italy was fantastic. My family are from a region of Italy called Abruzzo which has a spectacular country side. The Amalfi Coast and Pompeii were special and of course the food was incredible!
Where are you planning to travel to next?
My wife and I are heading to Vietnam to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary late next month.
One last thing:
In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take. As my daughter always saying, don’t put off travel, you never know what’s around the corner! Arrivederci (“see you later”).
