Retirement is a journey, not a destination and whether it’s a long way off or just around the corner it’s important to revisit your plan to see if you’re on track to achieving your retirement goals – whatever they may be.
Someone who has recently fulfilled part of their retirement dream is Morrows’ referral partner Peter Tratt.
A keen motorcyclist and adventurist, Peter travelled to Africa and joined a 3 month motorbike tour running from Cairo to Capetown. He believes that putting retirement plans in place is crucial not only to plan for your future but also to ensure you enjoy your life while you have the chance.
Peter’s personal retirement journey includes seeing as much of the world as he can. He has joined motorbike tours over the Himalaya’s, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia and whilst there is an element of danger it is the thrill of these adventures that challenges him and Africa certainly did just that.
The trip was organised by Melbourne based company Compass Expeditions and consisted of 16 participants from Canada, USA, UK, France and Australia. They freighted their own motorbikes to Alexandria and rode from the top of Egypt down through Cairo to Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope. This was the first time there had been an organised tour on this route and as a result it was professionally filmed for DVD and hopefully television.
With the threat of security, injury and malaria infection in the back of his mind, the trip was for the most part trouble free although there were a few close calls. Due to unrest in Eqypt the tour had an armed escort and in the short video link below, you can see Peter’s lucky escape in Namibia after coming off his bike at 80km/h. He walked away with only a few bumps and bruises and a cracked rib.
The riding was tough, mostly desert and over 45 degrees most of the time, but it was the experience of a lifetime and Peter’s lasting memory apart from the amazing animal encounters, was the people of Africa, from all religious backgrounds who although have nothing, they were happy, welcoming and helpful to them.
The next stop on Peter’s retirement journey is to ride through Japan or South America. We wish him all the best and look forward to hearing all about the next adventure.
