Long term Morrow’s clients, Ian & Simone Carson founded SecondBite in 2005 when they could no longer watch good food go to waste while people went hungry. The charity rescues leftover fresh food from restaurants and supermarkets and then redistributes it to needy and disadvantaged people.
Ian & Simone have been named the World Economic Forum’s social entrepreneurs of the year which is something both Simone and Ian are really proud to receive.
The program began when Prahran Market trader John Narduzzo gave the Carson’s leftover fruit and vegetables and they delivered it to the Sacred Heart Mission for the homeless. Mr Narduzzo then persuaded the other traders to get involved. SecondBite grew from there and ten years later the charity has expanded across Australia, employing 70 people and 1000 volunteers that each week deliver fresh produce to over 1,200 community food programs. These agencies are on the front line of food poverty, and without them thousands of people would go without a daily meal.
In 2013-14 alone, the charity redistributed 5.6 million kilograms of surplus fresh food that would have otherwise gone to waste.
SecondBite believes that despite the organisation achieving so much, Australians are still wasting $8 billion of food every year and 2 million people go hungry.
Morrows team congratulate Simone and Ian on creating such a fantastic initiative.
