Unfortunately the number of reported assaults in Australia’s Aged Care services has increased more than 10% in the last year. Seeking out the best and most appropriate care option can be confusing and stressful, particularly in light of these recent reports and if you need to make a decision quickly.
Morrows Aged Care Advisor Allison Hyland discusses what to look for, what to avoid and key issues to be aware of when searching for the best Aged Care service provider for your loved ones.
Firstly you will need an assessment
Whether you’re looking for in-home support or residential aged care, the first step is to contact the Aged Care Assessment Services (ACAS). ACAS will come and visit the home to review your loved ones needs and can approve eligibility for either community care (services delivered at home) or entry into a residential aged care home. A copy of the report will be provided and you will need this when filling out aged care applications.
Narrow the list and then research
Perhaps the biggest issue when researching aged care services is that currently there are no official ratings or consumer-driven evaluations to compare, praise or expose service providers. A good approach might involve talking to other residents and their families at a care facility you’re interested in and having a checklist of what is important to you – such as:
- Does the facility have a resident-centred care approach?
- Do they cater for people with dementia?
- Is there culturally appropriate care?
- Do they welcome involvement of relatives and friends?
- Is there effective pain management?
- Do they have end-of-life care options?
- What is their staffing structure like?
Staffing structure and ratios is key. In Australia there is no federally mandated staff ratio or minimum skills level for residential aged care workers. A facility’s staffing situation might consist of a few low- or no-skilled staff and very poor carer-to-client ratios. It’s a good idea to look at staff rosters and understand the mix of workers and the availability of Registered Nurses.
Top 5 tips in Choosing an Aged Care Provider
1. Compare a selection of providers
When evaluating residential aged care options contact a wide selection of providers for a greater sense of comparison. Try to talk to current clients and their families for some consumer evaluation. Do not rely on the marketing material.
2. Do your research and use a checklist
When visiting aged-care homes arrive prepared with a series of questions.
3. Check staffing arrangements carefully
Given there are no minimum staff or skills ratios, check staffing arrangements carefully. If you’re quoted staff numbers, check to see that the number of staff providing direct care do not include laundry or kitchen staff. In a site visit, take time to notice staff and ask about staff turnover.
4. Ensure you know your rights and responsibilities
Those using aged care have the right to be looked after properly, treated well and be provided with high-quality care and services. Understanding your rights and responsibilities as well as those of the service provider will help you make an informed decision and get the best quality care to suit your needs.
5. If in doubt seek professional advice
Seeking expert advice will give you clarity around making the right decision for your family. You can get assistance with understanding types of care available, understanding fees, liaison with government departments, filling out complex forms on your behalf and most importantly assistance in navigating this complex system.
