myGovID is Changing its Name to myID

To help reduce confusion for Australians between myGovID and myGov, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced that myGovID will be renamed as myID in mid-November. This change, however, is only in name. The functionality, security, and overall user experience will remain the same.

If you’re already using myGovID to access government online services, there’s no need to worry or take action. When the transition to myID occurs, the app will automatically update on most devices, or you can manually update it via the App Store or Google Play.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • No Need for New Set-Up: Your login details, including your email address and identity strength, will remain the same, so you won’t need to create a new account.
  • Seamless Update: The existing myGovID app will transition to myID without disruption. Your app should update automatically, but you can manually update it from your app store.
  • Continued Secure Access: You can still use the app to securely access government services, just as you do now.

In addition to reducing confusion between myGovID and myGov, the government is also expanding the Australian Digital ID System, which means that in the future, you may be able to use myID to access services across both government and private sectors.

Stay Safe from Scams

Along with the name change, the ATO has issued a reminder to remain vigilant about online scams. Scammers often target individuals with fake websites or apps that mimic official government services like myGovID or myID. To protect yourself:

  • Avoid Suspicious Links: Don’t click on suspicious links, open attachments, or download files from unsolicited emails or SMS. The ATO will never send an SMS with a link to a login page.
  • Download Only From Official Sources: Ensure you download myGovID (soon to be myID) from the official app stores — Google Play and the App Store. Be sure to enable notifications to stay updated when using online services.
  • Never Share Your Login Code: Your login details and codes are personal and should never be shared with anyone.

By staying informed and following these guidelines, you can use myID confidently, knowing that your access to important government services remains secure.
